Her face and stuff are that of a young lady...
So, I dunno... maybe she's just a young lady with gray-ish hair then...

Yes she is young.
It seems that once she confessed her feeling she became young again.

I'm thinking that falling in love is what broke the curse - because you saw her transforming back and forth from young to old throughout the movie and when she finally admitted that she was in love with Howl she stayed young. i am not too sure about the hair part but Howl didnt even call it grey hair - instead he said it was beautiful and was silver like a star [or something like that]. maybe this is suggesting that he learned to see beauty in a different way.

the curse itself was odd. basically whenever shes being true to herself she reverts back to her true self. when she was having that arguement with that arch mage or whatever her name is, she got so angry that she turned back to her self. as far as howl...well his story is special in its own way.

i loved the old woman persona though, it was just too funny. the english voice actors were quite good too.

Id just say that since she considered herself plain and how she started off as someone people would call boring that when she got cursed her body reflected what she felt on the inside, so once the curse broke its probably an after effect becausse she learned about herself and about love and its just kind of a reminder, or it could be that she just didnt actually break her spell, she might just have learned how to be young at heart.

I think they left it ambiguous on purpose. The three transformations Howl, the Prince, and Calcifer are really sharp in contrast, so I guess I would say that I don't think that the spell is broken. But Howl, I felt, could see Sophie as she really was at times. For instance, he looks in on her while she is sleeping and her entire self is young again, including her hair color. It is interesting that the Prince falls in love with her while she is old as well. It makes me wonder if cursed or magical beings can see through the curses to the original form.

I was also shocked to see that the anime was based on a novel by Diana Wynne Jones. That sounds like a very English type of name. Yet I'd never heard of it before now.

I agree. I think that there was so much happening at the end, if they had tried to do another "spell-breaking" scene it might have put it over the top. I think it's more like the spell is relaxed, not quite broken though.

Yes, Diana Wynne Jones is English. British, actually. She's one of the best authors of fantasy out there right now in my opinion. Her books include Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant, as well as Howl's Moving Castle and it's two sequals, Castle in the Air (which has nothing to do with the movie Laputa: Castle in the Sky) and House of Many Ways. The book has a very different ending from the movie, but both are equally good.

Most of the movie was incoherent so why try to find coherence in her hair color? It was polymorphic for no good reason, like most of the film.

IMO, this was a beautifully animated, confused mess of a movie. I consider myself a Miyazaki fan and next to Porco Rosso, this was my least favorite of his. I hope he makes a good comeback.

i think it has a symbolic meaning showing how she has changed from the beginning. if it were to be brown again, it would be like her going back to being the same person she was before. so i believe it reflects how she is a "new person" on the inside with an outside symbolic image. it is quite ambiguous so it could mean anything.

also, i think that when she would transform to young during the movie, it turned brown.

I really wish more people knew that the movie was based off a book- a good one, too. It's a little differnet from the movie, and a child's book, but i'd recommend more people read it.

From what I've seen, I'm inclined to think the opposite O.o

The film is a confused mess with no clear message. The needless additions of characters, the confused jumble of a setting, and that simply disgusting ending serve to completely rob it of the charm of the original work.

Are you using some kind of advanced logic I don't know about? Have you decided to assign new meanings to English words? Are you just intentionally burning a straw man and knowing full well that you're changing the subject and misrepresenting a claim?

I honestly think the movie managed to make a nice pot out of cow dung. It's still cow dung, but at least it's now a nice pot.

Miyazaki turned what was an unbearable book into a tolerable movie.

I'm not inclined to talk with you about how good Howl's Moving Castle is, seeing as you don't have anything to say.

If I remember it right, the maid turned back to normal, but her hair became shorter due to feeding the Calcifer...
