Hmm... Roughly calculated it'd be about 8K~9K at Flying Witch in a month chart, then would be a very decent sale for FW and a boost for a 2nd season... But like already said: this is just a calculation of me, and no fact yet...xD |

I enjoyed Love Live s1 and 2 but Sunshine was pretty garbage that did absolutely nothing new or special. It was basically S1 with new characters. The last episode they spent like 8 minutes recapping the previous 12 episodes....It just..wasn't good. Having THAT much of a lead over every other show is just saddening. New Game! deserves it's spot at #2...but seeing it so far behind Love Live just makes me mad at Japan. Real shame about Alderamin....one of the best of the season. |

Jesus Christ how...just how is it pulling those kinds of numbers when it's identical to yet worse than S1. Buying it for the made up pairings I guess. That's your opinion. For me, I found S2 superior to S1, because that drama near the end of S1, was a turn-off for many fans. It also logically makes sense why the numbers are higher than S1, as the Love Live fanbase number rapidly grew in between S1 and S2. This is evident in the sales numbers of the S2 volumes (2~7) without the event ticket serial code on them, as you can see below. S1 Vol.2: 28,618 Vol.3: 26,209 Vol.4: 26,379 Vol.5: 23,857 Vol.6: 26,547 Average w/o Vol.1&7: 26,322 S2 Vol.2: 59,409 Vol.3: 53,264 Vol.4: 55,539 Vol.5: 50,983 Vol.6: 51,140 Average w/o Vol.1&7: 54,067 |

Jesus Christ how...just how is it pulling those kinds of numbers when it's identical to yet worse than S1. Buying it for the made up pairings I guess. I shouldn't be surprised at all those cries of outrage over Love Live Sunshine doing so well. But I will be a devil's advocate and disagree that Love Live Sunshine is identical to Season 1. I'd concede that the first half of Sunshine parallels the first half of LL Season 1 closely. I'd concede that Sunshine might have relied too much on Muse references. But I disagree completely that Sunshine is identical. Does Love Live Sunshine parallel Love Live S1? Yes, in the first half, and almost certainly not in the second half. It would be stretch to argue that Episode 7 onwards is identical to S1. Were it identical, the You episode would have been all about You leaving Japan on a swimming scholarship to America, hence threatening the continued survival of Aqours. Were it identical, there would have been no conflict between the Third Years that dominated the middle-parts of Sunshine. Were it identical, the Tokyo event in Episode 7-8 where Chika's group of six gains no votes whatsoever would never had occurred, because it has no parallel to Love Live unless you are going to stretch things and claim it's parallel to Muse disappointing first performance. That kind of claim is hard to sustain, considering that Aqours was repudiated in a head-to head against other groups, infront of an audience, while Muse couldn't even get much of an audience to begin with, changing the entire dynamics of the second half. Does it parallel Muse not making it past the preliminaries in episode 12 -13 of S1? No, because Muse didn't even perform. Where Sunshine does parallel with the original is in the first six episodes. And it's probably not too surprising that such parallels exist, because Sunshine and S1 does share similar premises, in that a girl is inspired by some idol group and decides to try to form her own. This would mean that a composer needs to be found, a debut performance produced, the group must be expanded and so on. In that sense, Sunshine does track S1, by largely following the narrative structure of S1. But wait a moment? Is the way Riko was recruited identical to Maki? No, it started out that way, and diverged the moment Riko and Chika began one of the heart to heart private talks that defines their relationship throughout Sunshine. Does Yohane's recruitment in episode 5 have any parallels to S1? No, and Nico doesn't count since Nico's type of Chuuni is completely different from Yohane's. Of course, if Sunshine continued tracking the S1 structure past Episode 6, I might have agreed with you. But once the basic foundations of an Idol Group was established, Sunshine moved rather quickly to diverging very sharply from the S1 plot. And I suspect it's the second half of the season, that is generating nearly 50K plus projected sales, with a possible under-estimation of nearly 40%. Should Sunshine have run a different premise? Maybe. But I think they wanted to play it safe, and believed the fanbase had to be eased into accepting a different group and hence they choose not to risk a different premise but have a familiar one that initially seems to run in a similar manner to the first iteration of Love Live. I suspect that this strategy has paid off, and I think that Sunshine has sufficiently differentiated itself in the second half, that calling it identical is tad-bit too far. To answer the question why Sunshine is doing so well briefly then: Sunshine probably got those numbers by pandering cautiously to the Muse fanbase with a familiar first-half, and creating just enough differences in the second half to convince said fanbase that they were buying a new product, that was still part of the same Love Live brand, but different enough that buying it was worth it. Make no mistake, Love Live is a franchise-brand, and Sunshine was written probably to protect and sustain that brand. Also, the main pairing pushed in Sunshine is Riko-Chika. The most popular pairing happens to be Hanamaru-Yohane in Japan, even though that pairing has more or less reduced to a background Manzai routine post Episode 5. Riko-Chika is very far behind in the popularity polls, so I really, really doubt the idea that pairings are driving sales, given the main pairing isn't really that popular to begin with. |

Not sure why everyone is surprised at the sales of LoveLive and even Naria. Sales are really quite simple. People buy things because they want to buy them. Why? Because they liked the show and want to own it. Because they liked the show and want to support the show, to give it a better chance of a getting a sequel. This may cause them to buy multiple copies. Because they like the bonuses that comes with it, which could be concert lottery tickets, art boxes, bonus CDs, booklets, novels, manga, figures. If there are different bonuses at different stores then they may buy multiple copies to get all the posters, figures, art boxes, etc. If tickets allow for multiple entries by one person then people may buy 100 copies hoping to get a ticket. Often the standard packages will be resold online but a real supporter won't do that as it means money going to the show than if those buyers had bought a new copy. Some even buy it because they forgot to record the show on their PVR and don't know where to watch it online. Yes, this is a real answer given in surveys to otaku as to why they bought a show. Why do some shows sell poorly? Some fans understand that shows on certain TV networks are really driven by ratings instead so unless they really want to collect the show, they don't need to buy it. Some other fans would rather buy the cheaper manga or novels instead. This is for a few reasons. First, it is 1/10th the cost to buy a book instead of a disc. Next, they may want to support the author/artist directly rather than supporting them indirectly through the anime; they may understand that the original creator gets paid very little for the anime unless they have special involvement like also being the script writer and/or series composition director. Finally, many fans understand that most book adaptations are partial and will never completely adapt the work so there is no point in owning half a story when they can get the whole story in book form for less money. There can be some bandwagon effects. If a show looks like it is going to sell then some people will support it thinking that could lead to a sequel. If the show looks like it will tank then throwing your support to a lost cause is a waste of your money. |

Oricon Daily All-Genre Top 20 DVD/Top 30 BD Rankings for Sep 29. No surprises on Love Live! dominating this week. A few surprises though for the rest of the rankings so far: ● Joker Game BD-BOX Vol.2 looks like sales have dropped from BD-BOX Vol.1, despite also having an event ticket bundled on it. The reason why is that it has ranked lower than Re:Zero Vol.4, while BD-BOX Vol.1 ranked higher than Re:Zero Vol.3 a month back. Although, it could also be that Re:Zero Vol.4's first week sales are again higher than its previous volume. We shall see next Tuesday, which one it is. ● Tsukiuta. Vol.1 looks like a strong contender for #2 or #3 for the Summer season, alongside B-PROJECT. It came as a bit of a surprise in the ranking it did not show up on Amazon Stalker, due to being an Animate exclusive release. Although it also didn't show up in the Oricon BD/DVD database. ^I think you confused the list at the top as the BD list From last week's results and this week's rankings, we can deduce which series will sell more BD/DVD 1: Love Live Sunshine 2: B-Project 3-5: Boueibu, Mob Psycho, New Game 6: Danganronpa 3 7-10: Masou Gakuen HxH, Prisma Illya 3, Tsukiuta, Amanchu |

Alderamin getting 0.6k is not a surprise. How about advertising your anime properly, WB. Between that and contestable choices from Madhouse, they ruined any potential it could have on the market, good job, really. |
