There are obvious differences, mainly the eyes and the breasts, but I don't think it's fair to say they look nothing alike. The pic Sumatra posted is just not very flattering, but here's an example that (in my opinion) shows a better resemblance. If you cover her eyes I'd say the rest of her face and body is pretty similar.

Foot of the Mountains is a grind with obscure triggers. Power Vacuum is pure plot progression, it has no stats, and therefor no grind. Plus a robot helper if you do get lost. It's also one of the funniest goddamn things I've ever had the good fortune to stumble across. I look forward to new episodes of this the way I look forward to new seasons of What We Do In the Shadows. (Or insert your favorite comedy series.) If you're hesitating because of FotM, don't. They're like night and day.
Don't get me wrong, I just LOVE Power Vacuum. Top 3 on my list.
I just ran into FOTM recently and found a lot of gameplay and story elements similar to PV(ie. mom telling daughters to do the dishes after meals, MC has erection problems that need to be addressed imediately, new girl joins and shares room with MC).
I agree massive grinding is required and it gets frustrating. I'm just hanging on to it because of the similarities. It almost seemed like PV is FOTM with all the cons ironed out.

When you play enough of these games you start to recognize the tropes and clichés, but I think PV purposefully pokes fun at them rather than taking them too seriously. For instance the "choice" to creep on a character while they're asleep (seen in many games), but all the options in PV are to not do it.

The missing link is Big Brother. It was one of the main trope targets. Dishes after meal which you can then help her with, sharing a room, even the room clicking UI at the bottom was all from that. I don't recall FOTM having an erection problem arc though.

I don't think there was an arc per se, but I think there was a scene where the MC has (pretend?) pain and the mom checks it in the bathroom.

I vaguely recall another scene where the MC gets a bee sting and the mom takes him to a doctor (who is a slightly older woman) and the mom gets insecure/jealous while the doctor is "examining" him. Then the MC takes some erection pills that lead to another doctor visit or something? It's been a while and I'm not putting myself through that grind again!

Elusive missing link.gif

In FOTM, while wildly clicking on the CTRL key, the word priapism popped up during the doctor's appointment. That's what I was referring to, but I might be wrong with the context.
Love your work btw. Thanks!

They definitely share a sub-genre. "Suburban Oedipal Power Fantasy" I think someone called it in something I read, somewhere or other. Probably here, maybe check the reviews. Whatever it's called, it represents a pretty big proportion of lewd VNs. And its tropes are numerous and weirdly particular, like a scary older sister who's always raven haired.

But the similarities are surface level. Even putting aside its satirical aspects, the gap in writing quality between Power Vacuum and the rest of the... whatever you want to call the genre, is like the difference between Tolkien and the rest of Fantasy. There's PV up there with, like, actual books - then a sharp drop to the small-but-still-larger-than-it-has-any-right-to-be tier of porn VNs that also genuinely work as fiction - then a looonnng way down to the jumbled heap of good-atrocious just-porn representing the rest of the medium. Unless FotM has changed a lot since I played it, I'd place it somehwere in the upper third of that general pile.

Is there a way to re-watch the chapter progression scenes?
It's been a while since I played Power Vacuum and I kinda forgot some things from the scene were MC opens the safe and the past of Hunter and Drew is explained.

Yes, you can in the gallery.
For the safe scene and history you can check this on Chapter 7

Seriously how do you get the patch to work? I still only get to Sean hiding under the bed and then it says To Be Continued tried everything I can think of.

You put the patch in the folder named Power Vacuum/Game?
And then started a new game?

I only check this thread every month or so, so sorry if thus question is asked a lot. Was it said that the What If... series was moved to once every two months to hold people over between updates, and that we're only a month or two from chapter 11?

I doubt we are only a month or two away. The last update took about 7 months and it's only been about 3 months since chapter 10. I'd say if we're lucky we might get update around january, but around march is more likely.
