Damn, this episode got very chaotic.

However, I think it also contained a emotional tone from Shakuyaku's perspective. I just find it very interesting that the episode had a theme balancing between life and death. So much despair really. Jinka just wanted to help people but I think the tone of the show is well done. Their world has always been harsh.

I don't like that fighting is the only option here. I feel like if they explain properly that there's childbirth, HUMAN childbirth going on there, it'd have a different outcome.

To end on a positive note, Douren's beast form arouses me.

in the manga, when Douren (the tiger guy) ask Resshin (the bag man) what was hidden, Resshin did point out that he saw a pregnant woman but ignore it anw, still said that villager should pay for trying to hide stuffs.

i like this ep alot. but its so weird they did change some minor details about this ep. Especially Shinsuke cause they make him a bit dumber for some reasons. At least he will not be as dumb anymore after this ep.

Oh, I thought there won't be anything between Shinsuke and Shakugan, this is cool to see (though I can see how some people won't like this)
6:52 I looove this moment. The voice, the animation, everything lmao. I just had to make it a gif.

11:42 Does someone know what is the first kanji? I know that it has 扌, but can't figure out everything else.

12:31 I was using the Japanese Wikipedia page to look for the meanings of the technique names up to this point, but Fukuryuuken wasn't there. I wish they showed how it's written on the screen, so people who aren't watching with JP subs can understand it too.

13:25 ど根性 (do-konjou) - "utter gutsiness; plenty of guts; grit" is written as 導魂情 - "guide soul feeling", and 拳 (kobushi) - "fist" is written as 巨武志 - "gigantic warrior ambition". I love Japanese.

The art and animation were amazing this episode.
The random pregnant woman being used as a plot device was kinda eh, but okay. A bit weird how she didn't react to Jinka, a man she only just met, crying when he saw her children. She doesn't know what was actually happening outside, right? or am i dumb
And I don't believe that Shakugan is gone, she's in the OP, part of the main cast and all, so she's totally coming back. (please come back. This actually got me pretty emotional, damn.)

No OP and ED this episode.Actually a really great eps i wasn't expecting from the 1st half.
The bit where Kagan was exposing Shaku was hilarious.Fight scene was just straight fire. And Shaku's sacrifice was really impactful.

No OP. No ED either.

It was cute how Kagan confessed for Shakuyaku. I was looking forward to how Shinsuke was going to react to that further on. Of course, the story had to piss all over that.

What just happened? Did Shaku really die? She was such a sweet character. I don't think she should've died so early. She was part of the main group and all that. Man, this sucks...

Since Shaku is probably dead the OP and ED might change in the next episode. But man, it still doesn't feel right.

I’m in tears. Chills all over. This is what White Fox can do at their very best. I knew absolutely nothing about this series coming into this season so I did not expect anything but a normal fun episode that we’ve been getting from this story. I had no idea I would have my heart shattered in a million pieces

I mean, yea. In hindsight there were some flags raised like Shinuske and Shaku having a cute moment and Kagan saying he hopes they get married one day, training him to use his sword, etc. Then the whole deal with the pregnant lady .. but man why? Shakuyaku’s life has been so much suffering already, she finally gets a nice group of friends and a place to call home, and it’s so cruelly taken from her.

The twins being born as Shaku gets crushed will haunt me forever. The music, the emotion, the voice acting, all perfection. No words really. It would feel like a waste of a beautiful sacrifice to bring her back, but man please somehow do it 😭

Even Douren, whose mission was to kill Jinka refused to continue the fight at that point. You know how fucked up a situation’s gotta be for the antagonist to walk away like that?

Speaking of Jinka, seeing him breakdown and hearing his wails was so hard.. even Tama, a Katawara who’s been around for centuries couldn’t help but cry. Fuck man, painful but beautiful episode

That really hit hard. I hope they find a way for Shaku to be saved but the level of drama says no. Killing the OP and ED and ramping up the emo even more with haunting Evan Call music was powerful anime skills.

I don't even know the last time I was this blindsided by a character death... I mean the signs were there in retrospect but it just didn't even occur to me as a possibility.
Ughh between finishing P3R last night and now this... my tears are gonna run dry.
Was a truly beautiful episode, but damn I'd have liked to see more of her before this, seemed rather final to maintain hope still will tho, alas loving the show and looking forward to where it'll go from here.

Yeah, I was not really ready for that.

I have been honestly pretty happy with this show. It seemed very straightforward story-wise, and the production values were a bit underrated. (I have definitely seen worse looking and animated shows.) But I was not prepared to such an emotional episode.

Sengoku Youko has become one of my favorites this season. The main reason is the great characters.
So, after the tension and threat in previous episodes, the party's stay in the rock yokai village was a relief. Then the arrival of the pregnant woman united humans and yokai alike in caring for her. Then the bas*&^%s made me cry ugly tears.

Her protecting the birth of those children.
Confessing to a boy she likes and getting a positive response.
Making a promise.
Announcing their plans to the future.
No ending, just eve sadder music and a black background.

Okay, I knew they were too weak and needed some sort of impetus to start off with, but I didn't see this one coming! Maybe the leak of the confession was a loose hint but we've been reminded once again here that the world is harsh. Seeing Jinka breakdown like that was surprising and heartbreaking to see. She passed away leaving two new lives, that's as Shakuyaku as it gets.

The mother must be distraught if she finds out the truth. I've got a feeling the anime will just brush that aside, though.

Rematch with the tiger and dragon still in the air, however. They've got to find some way to level up or more tragedy will await...

@InNeedOfAName Ah, okay, that'd all a lot to the scene! Hopefully, they reserve a few seconds for this.

This was a good episode.

The plot takes an entirely different direction if Kagan is truly deceased.

I loved the crazy laughing faces while they were fighting each other. You giggle uncontrollably when you fight someone at your strength.

Well damn, I was truly not expecting that this episode. RIP Shakugan, I did love your character(◞‸◟). I now wonder if her Kagan can be transported into another body? Perhaps Shinsuke since they seemed to be forming a close relationship lately. The surprising change in character for Jinka was also great, we got to see him cry and express heavy emotions that we would not expect from him. Perhaps this will lead us to learn more about him in the near future!

@Inexplicable I mean, it's really not nearly as contrived as you're trying to make it out to be lol. There are many people in the world who would have altruistic behaviour like this and it fits her redemption from the rampage. If anything, it's crazy how forced these criticisms sound against a well developed story.

i really like how they handled the babies having Shakugan's name, but this was really a sad episode, damn

Shakugan died a hero, rest in piece
i wouldn't be mad if they revived her (please do), but just like in other anime (cough cough attack on titan) reviving one dead chara makes our sad feelings and their heroic death seem like it was wasted lol

i seriously hope there's something interesting in future episodes, cause killing her makes me lose another bit of my already not high interest in this anime lol

at least Jinka's vs the tiger guy was fun, but ofc the other guy wouldn't allow them to finish their fight, annoying idiot ...

and then there's the sword mc guy who is boring as hell ... oh well lol

Meh, this left me cold and annoyed more than sad. I knew she'd have twins and name one after each of them even watching this blind as I am, but the death surprised me in a bad way. If I'd known she was gonna die going in I wouldn't have bothered with this, but I'm already invested so I'll continue. It just seemed so...unnecessary. I actually like the show less now than I did before because of it, which seems like the opposite opinion of everyone else here lmao. Ah well, if Shinsuke becomes a true badass now I'll still be annoyed that it took this, but I'll enjoy his power anyway. All of this is, of course, assuming she is and stays dead, but I think it's a fairly safe assumption after all that pageantry. But as I said before I am watching this blind so...who knows?

This felt sort of similar to how deaths in Akame ga Kill were handled, only this time they didn’t drop backstories right beforehand, but meaningful character interactions that made it feel like the group was about to grow even closer and then bam, tragedy. I’m more hurt for Shinsuke than Shaku but it’s not like I felt nothing, the humanity in Jinka coming out afterward was cool to see as well.
