It's only focusing on the flower part to further reiterate how she thinks that's what she's appreciated for, her ability to be pretty and perfect

this is the first time dylan is actually engaged with a movie in a WHILE (as in like he enjoys the movie)

The animators had to FIGHT to get them to let Luisa keep her muscles. They wanted to do the "girl with skinny arms is freakishly strong". Trope.
Disney banked everything on Isabella being the most popular character, so largely focused on making her dolls, but surprise! It was only Perfect Isabella, not messy Isabella.
Also kids liked Luisa more. Who knew theyd actually want the giant muscle lady?

Its actually very subtle: she was chosen as the next matriarch.
If you look, as her door disappears, the candle doesn’t flicker.
It only flickers when Alma reacts negatively.
Thats why when the house comes back alive, her door becomes the house's FRONT door!

The way he predicts almost the entire plot at the beginning but keeps getting distracted by the older women he's thirsting over 😭😭 "A HAREM FOR ME" IS CRAZYYY 7:50

I just realized that the first three's gifts are actually pretty helpful when you think of the time period they got them:
Healing people with food: healing and feeding people when medical supplies were probably scarce.
Visions of the future: be able to see soldiers coming before they ever even get there so they can hide everyone in the village.
Control the weather with emotions: send a storm to scare soldiers away.

My favorite fun fact about this movie is that the word "madrigal" in music is a part-song for several voices, typically a cappella (without instrumental accompaniment). Usually around 4 to 6.
And how many were singing during the overlapping part of "We Don't Talk About Bruno"? Isabella, Luisa, Felix, Camilo, Dolores, and Pepa. The musical details in this movie are insane.

I’m a grown woman, but this is unironically one of my favorite movies. I’m not Colombian, but I’m Mexican-American and I think this movie did a great job at portraying Hispanic/Latino cultures and the generational trauma that runs in a lot of our families. Growing up, my American friends never really understood my culture, and it makes me happy that kids can now see a movie like this or Coco and start to understand why certain values are honored so highly. I could turn this into a dissertation, but basically this movie means a lot to me and I’m glad Dylan is finally seeing it lol.

Some of my issues with this movie:
-they want to convince us that Isabela was miserable because she was perfect, like it makes sense that she hated having to please everyone specially her grandma but like, she hated being pretty? She hated having one of the coolest gifts of her family? She hated that everyone loved her? And then the moment she decides not to be so perfect anymore all her problems with Mirabel are solved as if the only reason Mirabel didn’t get along with her was because of her perfect little princess image but we see that Isabela was unnecessarily mean and patronizing towards Mirabel before that.
-when Bruno showed up in the end his mother and sisters smiled and hugged him right away, like, did they forget they spent the whole movie talking about how badly they didn’t want him there, that they blamed him for whatever bad thing that happened and literally sang a song about not even wanting to talk about him? And then he apologizes for “ruining Pepa’s wedding” even though he didn’t even do anything she was obviously the one that caused that rain, that’s literally what her gift is about!
-Abuela’s “redemption” (if we can even call it that) was way too rushed and not convincing at all, I think a lot of writers don’t understand that making a character have a change of heart when they have no other option is not the same as redeeming them, the grandma chose the miracle over the wellness of her family whenever she could, but then the miracle was gone so she chose her family in the end but what else she could have done? She either apologized or stayed alone. Also, ever thought that maybe she just apologized and helped them reunite because somehow she knew that was the way to get the miracle back? It’s a possibility…
-they kept saying Mirabel was miserable and felt less special because she didn’t get a gift but she actually deals with that reality really well, what actually gets her upset is that people around her keep saying that she must feel miserable and less special and her own family excludes her because of it
