Beethoven “Moonlight Sonata” for Old Elephant

- Mongkol is a 61-year-old former logging elephant. His captive-held life was spent hauling trees in the Thai forest. His body shape is deformed through hard labor, he lost his right eye and tusk in this brutal logging practice. Mongkol was rescued and brought to Elephants World to spend the rest of his days relaxing peacefully in freedom by the River Kwai. I discovered Mongkol is an extremely gentle, sensitive elephant who enjoys music, especially this slow movement by Beethoven which I play to him occasionally in the day and night.
Can you imagine Beethoven's reaction if he was brought back to life, realising that the song he wrote more than 200 years ago is now played by a dude with a piano to an old elephant in a forest in Thailand, and broadcasted all around the planet for 1.3 millions people to enjoy.
Beethoven would be honored.
He would cry tears of joy, no doubt
Man stop that blunt
I don't know man, I think he probably would complain about not being able to hear shit.
Not for us, for the elephant.
He didn’t walk away. He stayed and listened intently. Animals amaze me. He even turned to look at this amazing pianist.
Facts!! I was thinking that. It wanted to be there and obviously enjoyed it.
I think his trunk danced a little too ❤

@Ginamy72 Thank you! I think it's cool too. 😎
@ the house in your background looks beautiful, not just the house of course, I mean the whole setting. I don’t spend as much time outside as I’d like. It’s so beautiful and everyday is worth treasuring.
At the risk of sounding too corny, natural beauty is the best

An elephant never forgets, especially not the moonlight Sonata. 😉
Neither the pianist

Beautiful. My Mom learned to play Moonlight Sonata. It was her Christmas gift to me when I returned home from college for Christmas my senior year. After dinner on Christmas Eve, she asked me to join her in the living room, where she sat at the piano bench and played it for me. Best Christmas gift ever had.
Beethoven probably never imagined that an elephant would enjoy his Moonlight Sonata so much.
xuj62 he would probably be very happy to know
I wondee if they actually can hear this as it is. Or do they just hear this as something like a birds chirping.
@@larryxiang822 I think elephants are very intelligent. The patterns and sounds are probably soothing to them as opposed to random noises like birds chirping. Just my uneducated guess
It's perfect and dreamy. The elephant is so majestic, it suits him.
he knew. This is something I know - after seeing 5 seconds of this video.
These are the moments the internet was made for.
How beautiful❤
Amen, well said.
Wholesome, warming and uplifting. We all need these things in our lives.
Absolutely not. It's a design of satan's that has inflicted much damage on the world, as opposed to the good it has done. It was literally created as a means to entertain, which is done to keep people apathetic towards suffering in the world, and to spread corruption.
This is what the internet was meant to be...
Fcuk yeah.
Finally. The piece is played in the setting Beethoven originally intended.
Is that what he told you?
In an elephant rescue?
I guess he was talking about playing the sonata at night, in moonlight :)
It was decided that the Imperial royal family, headed by the Emperor, should leave Vienna for their own safety. This included the Emperor's youngest brother, Archduke Rudolph, friend and patron of Beethoven. Beethoven told the Archduke he would compose a Piano Sonata to mark the occasion.

Don't forget elephants that play their own sonatas.

They especially love "Pata Pata" :-D
The thing about moonlight sonata is that it's between dark and light, where it's sad if you feel sad, and it feels bright when you are happy❤❤❤. Like a moonlight
The piece always seems sad to me. It's the sound of a breaking heart and loss.
That is the best description of Beethoven I have ever read in my entire life. Thank you, Aibanjayobiso1949! 🤍🤍🫧

it sounds somber but hopefully to me.
It's very melancholic and introspective. Both of which are complex states of being that are usually not purely sad or purely happy
The elephant was a more polite audience than you will find at most concerts.

The power of music is absolute.
Thank you, kind sir.
At this moment, there is no sorrow, pain, violence, or greed. Just two intelligent creatures who are enjoying wonderful music. I wish we could have more moments like this.
Those things will always be a part of human life, but we could probably reduce them all by a great deal if we stopped letting rich people use the economy as a casino. Since they own both parties and know that the government will bail them out when they crash the economy by abusing deregulation, they get carte blanche to screw us six ways from Sunday with near-impunity. Meanwhile, we could spend the rest of our lives in prison for stealing to meet our basic needs... being paid $0.27/day to work for the same assholes who were responsible for shipping all the manufacturing jobs to countries with fewer labor protections.
The world is pretty messed up right now, and most problems can be traced back to what is euphemistically known as the Age of Exploration. Europe spent centuries robbing the countries we today call underdeveloped; funny how having resources stolen at gunpoint can make people poor. Scientists should study that. World War I was essentially European countries fighting over who got to rob Africa, and World War II was an attempted re-litigation of WWI. Europe spent all its time rebuilding after destroying itself over the course of two wars, so it fell on America to keep the poor countries in line. We bombed the shit out of Korea and Vietnam in an attempt to prevent their popular communist revolutions from succeeding, losing both times while managing the consolation prize of stealing part ot Korea then installing a fascist dictator. We have couped governments in the Middle East, Africa, South America... every continent except Antarctica. Americans need to get their shit together and stop our government from murdering poor people on behalf of Wall St.
So, very precious. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

There’s something almost ethereal to this. It has a dream like quality. The dark background, with the crickets underlaying the music, the soft and melodic music, the bright spotlight on the center and the harsh shadows on the ancient beast in the back, the gentle swaying of the elephant, the oddity of the piano in the jungle, and the complete normalcy of the piano player himself, it reminds me of an absurdist painting spiraling into a light and soothing dream.

Elephants are known to be one of the few animals that can truly appreciate and understand music. You can really see that he is interested in what you are playing, listening intently. This is really beautiful to see.
Personally i think cows and certain types of birds also enjoy 'Human Music.'
Parrots are total music lovers. even budgies will bob their little heads up and down to the beat and mimic melodies. Big parrots will often straight up sing along. It's not just that they're repeating things, music is good for their mental well-being, and it's a recommended part of caring for a bird to play them music, sing to them etc. They're wonderful animals. (just make sure it's not too loud obvs)
@@wademichalski768 So it's not as much as enjoy it, many animals can enjoy the music but not many can understand it. Elephants are known to be able to understand rhythm, tone pattern and even the emotional tone of the music. as well as enjoy it.

Its so interesting because elephants tend to prefer sounds in a lower register, because it is easier for them to hear. Every time Mongkol turns to look at Paul it is when Paul is playing in a higher octave. As if he is confused, trying to understand where the sound went, what happened, or trying to tell Paul to play lower again. Then every time Paul plays lower notes, Mongkol turns away to sway, flap his ears, or raise his trunk in happiness. He enjoys the lower sounds more and is having a more personal engagement with lower notes. When it is higher, it is almost like a more communal experience, because he is obviously curious about what Paul is doing or how he is doing that. Such a beautiful, sensitive, and intelligent guy.
Ava Anderson good observation 👏🏼

He probably gets serenaded every night
Hard to know. He lived in a different time and AFAIK didn't have to idea to play to animals himself.
Are there character studies about him?
They say elephants remember forever, if true. Then hopefully so :)
beethoven famously hated elephants and frequently hired poachers to kill them for their ivory tusks, only to let the poachers keep the ivory for themselves, as a kind of poacher prank/cold blooded elephant assassination. this satisfied his need to be mysterious and the smartest person in the room, while also assuaging his lifelong phobia of elephants because of their inherent wisdom and memory. he had made many mistakes in his life, and the thought of a nearby elephant both wise enough to understand his mistake and eidetic enough to remember it kept him in a state of constant paranoia that elephants were spreading rumors about him. in a way this video is ultimately a complete spit in the face to beethoven, who was an elephant racist for really weird reasons. it also serves as elephant retribution, finally allowing an elephant ancestor to hear the music they were so deliberately deprived of so many years ago, by a proxy murderer and coward. you should learn more about beethoven before you say something so ironic and so uninformed.
@@tonoornottono Source?? Aside from whatever inane falsities you thought would be a good idea to make up, Beethoven - being German - actually loved elephants as they were powerful like the Prince Electors and always remembered slights against them (just as the German Protestants remembered the transgressions of the Pope). I think you might be projecting your own insecurities as Beethoven often *was* the smartest person in the room - people around you must have paid more mind to him while you desperately begged for attention. Wouldn't seem so farfetched as whatever drivel you bothered to write, completely unprovoked, bore barely any resemblance to reality and seemed more as a sad, broken person making a desperate last grasp to forget about how little people care about him. Look inward.

My mum was an accomplished pianist and when she would play all the dogs and cats would lie down on the rugs and just listen ❤️
wow:) how beautiful ♥🐞
If animals are brought up with music it brings them comfort. I am sure they were so happy every time your mum played for them.
That's beautiful...
Great classical music has divine power u can also play like her if u take a firm decision to learn the piano
I've seen videos of babies and toddlers quietly weeping when listening to classical music, it can be so emotional
I wonder, how many animals are hiding in the dark, listening to this and enjoying some minutes of peace.....:-)
Feeling all the frequency's, im in tears jajaja, the most beautiful miracle on human existence is
Music
We are so lucky to understand assimilate feel and play and make music
@MyGun4hire dude dont be a troll to each their own show respect 4 others way of thinking maby music feels like a miracle to them
You got me!
From what I heard the latest number hiding in the woods listening is 17,593
as far as I know, animals don’t hear music as beautifully harmonized notes but more like a noise. so they wouldn’t be like: “wow!! music” they would be like “wtf is this sound”
Paul sir, you are a legend. That beautiful elephant will never forget that. And now neither will we. Peace and happiness to you.
Thousands of years from now elephants will speak of a being who sat infront of a black box and created magic through sound. Religions will form from it and music will be the savior of the elephants.
Light T lol
Sounds like Dagda's Magic Harp to me.
Light T animals are smarter than religion.
You have spoken sir!
Man I would like to smoke the same weed as you sir
Me: That elephant looks so funny just sitting there watching the pianist
Also me: Just sitting there watching an elephant watch a pianist
Also CIA: watching us watch an Elephant Listening to a Pianist.
Well that's what you do when you watch some on perform 🤪

nah shon Also God: Watching aliens watch the CIA watch us watch an elephant watch a Pianist
Watching an elephant watch a pianist that is also, in turn, watching the elephant.
Everyone's commenting about the music or the elephant, but I'm here feeling very impressed that someone hauled that piano out there to play for Mongkol. Mad respect.
That's a good point.
so very true, they could have brought out a boom box but it would never have been the same.
Plot twist, mongkol brought it himself
At least it's an upright and not a grand piano LOL
I was thinking the same thing. Not to mention all the bugs.
That elephant is such a beautiful animal. They are the best. I love that the elephant is listening to the music. They're my favorite animal 🐘💖🥰
There's something incredibly wholesome about a man playing the piano for an elderly elephant in the middle of the night
Imagine if the whole world was doing this instead of fighting and killing instead.
Holy
Imagine doing this in the wild - 🤔 I'm guessing you'd Get eaten pretty fast. 🤷🏼♂️ Just saying.
@@89ksokd91 A man can dream...
Ah yes. RUclips: Where you can watch a man play piano for an elephant. If you want.
i didn't realize that i needed this until RUclips showed me! ;)
@@irokekula5739 same here 😊
Lol you're right, shout out to RUclips!
❤ 😢
So true Joe. I do the same and enjoy the eccentric's of it all.
When the elephant turns to look at him, I know there's a connection. He doesn't walk away he stands right next to the piano.
RaiRaiBrown Right! And the fact that the elephant is blind makes that part so much more remarkable💜
His tail, ears and trunk speak volumes!
It’s fake. You can easily tell it’s green-screened.

@@jacobnielsen1224 watch his "behind the scenes" video. It's not fake
I don't think people realize the significance of this amazing and beautiful experience. To see how sensitive animals are to music...to watch them understand the universal language that can reach every single being no matter who or what they are is so profound that words cannot express it's sheer magnitude of connection. Thank you, kind sir, for sharing this magnificent piece with such a magnificent sentient being.
Both, pianist and elephant, are fortunate to have such a friend. 👍😊
Yup, because such beasts can be much more of a friend than any p.o.s. smart phone toting human.
🏃
Such a majestic and divine creature. 💓
Yes.
Mmm.... The elephant's not bad either!! 😁🐘
I would love to meet an elephant one day.
@@rhondaweber5638 They're so beautiful. I got to touch one once and I'll always remember it
And dangerous too
I don't know why, but watching this makes me feel like I would give anything to know what is going through that elephant's mind, as he's listening. Does he enjoy it? Does he find it magical? Does he wish the old bastard would stop making all that racket? Does it bring back memories? Does it make him miss somebody? His reaction is obvious but, i've no way to translate it and it's killing me lol...
Dude, you make me feeling the same frickn thing!
An elephant flapping its ears means it's happy! It's enjoying the moment :)
Mantis Monk how’d did I know you were Asian before even looking at your picture lol
@@The10lfunk4 lol Hmm I wonder XD
What really makes you wonder is whether it can feel those moments of tension then joyous release that music will create.
I know the brain has to learn how to hear music and it's obvious that this elephant has listened to that piano more than once coz of the patience it has. If it has spent enough time listening and growing brain pathways, it may even be able to anticipate the hints at the direction that music will give you as it progresses along a piece... and that is where the music also begins to emotionally reward the listener as well.
It does make you wonder if that elephant has developed that coz it sure seemed to appreciate it... :)
Thank you for playing this music. So soothing for the Elephant but also for those who listen. Peacefull and calming.💗💗
At one point he sways his head and at another point it seems he is being carried away with the melody! Wonderful creature!
yeah, he was totally jamming out to it a little

If only Beethoven himself could see how his sublime emotional piece of music transcends species...True proof of the absolute power of music and the harmonies.

@@SamuelBlack84 sooo beautiful!! 💓
I completely agree...
What a wonderful idea!
Hands down the most uplifting and powerful statements of music ever. I cry every time I see the elephant sway.
I didn’t expect the elephant to cry - incredibly moving. Seeing him embrace and hug the elephant at the end and tell it good night, was just right. Thank you for your kindness 😊
I knew w i wasn't seeing things, the elephant did cry
Probably sad because it's not with its herd. They're very close as families
ショパンならどんな感じだったのかな。
The Anthropmorphism is off the scale among you plebs. This isn’t Disney and the elephant isn’t getting emotionally moved by this particular rendition of classical art to the point of tears. Music like this calms them. If it’s sad there’s probably a reason.
@@juliusklugi7430 Ah, it's so fun to be haughty with the plebs, isn't it? I admit I find it amusing at times myself. Still, I wouldn't be so quick to venture a judgement about the emotional life of fellow creatures.
He must love his elephant dearly. Very touching.
