The Human–Robot Empowerment Lab (HRELab) is a research laboratory within the College of Engineering at the University of Utah, dedicated to advancing assistive and rehabilitative robotics through innovative human sensing and modeling techniques.
Mission
editHRELab aims to enhance human–robot interactions by developing technologies that improve the effectiveness of assistive and rehabilitative robots. The lab focuses on creating systems that are safer, more intuitive, and personalized to individual users' needs.
Research Focus
editThe lab's research involves leveraging multiple sensing modalities, including ultrasound (sonomyography) , surface Electromyography (sEMG), and Motion capture, to better evaluate human capability and intent. This comprehensive approach enables the development of more effective assistive and rehabilitative robots.
Leadership
editAs of January 1, 2024, Dr. Laura Hallock has joined the University of Utah as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering with additional appointments in physical rehabilitation and computer science, and leads the HRELab.
Dr. Hallock's expertise lies in human–robot control interfaces, neuromusculoskeletal sensing, and machine learning, which align with the lab's mission to improve human–robot systems.
Collaborations
editHRELab is housed within the Department of Mechanical Engineering and actively collaborates across engineering and medical disciplines, including partnerships with the Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital. These collaborations facilitate the translation of research into practical applications that benefit individuals requiring assistive technologies.
