of course the writing is bad, its down right terrible but its still class to watch. if you read the comic the last arc sucks but the writer was ill. the show is still good and has many great fight scenes. Just enjoy the ride.
@Stanleyliam1990 How can you enjoy the journey if your writing is terrible? What you wrote makes no sense

I have the exact same questions as the OP. The Japanese hunters were acting so cocky and they seemed to have the upper hand (mostly) in their spar so why did they get wiped out when the Korean hunters fought for longer and survived, barring the healer.

Unless I'm misunderstanding Sung's powers, he should be able to communicate with his shadows without any delay and therefore should be able to exchange as soon as the battle went sideways. I'm okay with him not going immediately because I don't think he put shadows on the Japanese hunters but he should have been there after Hunter Cha got injured. It was taking me out of the episode, I was constantly thinking "Why tf hasn't Jinwoo teleported in and helped yet? For dramatic effect?"

Not being a hater, this is one of my favourite shows this season. I'm just curious.
@SamuelPapprill If you are looking for answers on solo leveling, I assure you that you will not find them, the show does a terrible job of telling or explaining things to you, the only thing it wants to do is just show you how cool Jinwoo is every time, that's why many people criticize it

I'm not sure so if anybody knows for good please correct me, but when I read the manwha Jinwoo was doing some everyday life thing, I think walking in the street with groceries or spending time with his mother, or something like that so it kinda took him by surprise as he believed that S-rank hunters were going to be alright on the Jeju raid. He was definitely not aura farming at the top of a building like they did on the anime that much I can say.

Then about the ant king wiping the DFN crew and sparing almost everyone on the korean side... yeah, I also noticed that and consider it major bad writing but hey it's plot armour and it exists on every anime. At this point, every episode of the second season was Jinwoo aura farming and struggling just about a bit before beating a new boss or completing a new gate/raid; that is the point of the anime and it will continue to be like that for most of the story.

Anyways, I think SL is a really enjoying and refreshing watch due to the animation being really good and the story not being a hassle. Also Hiroyuki Sawano boosts any show by 1-2 points just by the background music.

btw I didn't take time to read all of the thread but there are some haters in here. With more than 100k posts I can definitely see you insulting some of their most liked shows so they will just rumble when they see you

It ain’t that bad man, like if u complain about things like “oh why didn’t he behead him instead of him” or “why didn’t sung Jin woo come earlier” it don’t gotta be perfect logic in every piece of fiction. Sometimes a show can be this way for the simple fact that it is more enjoyable the simpler it is. Not everything needs to be perfectly realistic, it takes away from the fantasy elements. Makes things less cinematic, and at the end of the day it’s a simple story, meant to make u feel the hype in these moments. They can’t just kill everyone off right here but the author wanted to make it a dire moment. People nit pick and hate cuz they believe themselves to be above everyone else literary ability and preference. Everyone is and elitist nowadays and it ruins the enjoyment for people who just wanna watch something for fun.
@MoonDoggieDog the author should have tried to write something better, the beauty of writing is that you are only limited by your imagination or ability to write something and if this is the best the author has managed to give us then it deserves to be criticized. The plan of the Japanese was stupid, it only served to make them bad (as if it were necessary), it would have been better if Goto is a group of Japanese went inside to destroy the queen ant and everyone else was outside, in this way Beru can kill everyone inside and Jinwoo can intervene when he senses that the situation is critical...

Yup in the manhwa he was walking on the street before he teleports. The anime just makes him needlessly cool and an aura farmer.

Sawano is fantastic. He makes bangers every single time. He doesn't miss 🔥🔥

he waited till about the last possible minute, that's for sure. I get not wanting to go, but he probably should have popped in when the black ant showed up unless he genuinely didn't believe he could defeat it. He encountered the Japanese hunters under very different circumstances so the difference is handling isn't particularly crazy. The thing can talk and clearly has conplex thoughts. It probably wanted to torment them for killing the queen.

Well that's not his fault. The shadow in Goto Ryuji probably alerted him and he appeared. The Ant King itself is quite fast. Both Jin Woo and the Ant King had match of Speed as you'll see in the next episode.

I loved this episode
It is the best this season so far
To answer your questions (my humble opinion):
When Beru was fighting the Japanese hunters he was just doing the job by killing the intruders, but when he saw the queen dead, just cutting heads is not satisfying he needed to smash them , torture them before killing them
About Jin Woo , I don’t think that his impression was it’s an easy raid and they will be able to do it with no causalities! So having a few death shouldn’t be unexpected 😅

In addition, not all Japanese hunters have shadows with them (I think some of them were still up when sent his shadows to the rest)

@Leon888 It does make sense. Think about it like this. Why do millions of people watch shows like Seinfeld, Friends, The Simpsons, and The Big Bang Theory? It certainly is not because of a plot, continuity, or overarching story. It is about the antics of the characters and how much an individual character can capture our attention regardless of how dumb the paper thin plot is from episode to episode.

It is a similar thing here (even if there is a plot somewhere in this mess). The story is not as relevant as the power fantasy fight scenes and that is why there is very little oversight when it comes to plot development. It is also why people love One Punch Man. It is purely driven by one or very few aspects of storytelling and sometimes that is enough.

If the fights were not as good as they are, nobody would be watching this.

You again. Goddammit. You really like to piss off everyone don't you ? Let them enjoy it. They like it for the animation. The writing isn't the best but this is a power fantasy. They didn't expect one piece or Attack on Titan level writing. Shut up and stop with the raigebait.

This is an anime where you turn your brain off and watch for the fight and animation, like demon slayer. Stop acting like a stuck up annoying elitist.

Only the perspective of the Korean Hunters are being broadcasted with a 10 minute delay.
The outside world does not know of Japan’s casualties.

Jinwoo never planned to go because he wanted to spend time with his mom. He thought that they could handle everything.

By the time the broadcast caught up to the Korean Hunter’s getting washed, he realized he had to get involved because they were going to die.

It is NOT bad writing.

It is pretty bad writing, because he can communicate with his shadows all the time. He does not need a broadcast. Heck he isn't even watching the broadcast.. he is sitting on a f-ing roof....

You may had watched season 1, it should not be surprise for you because this anime is popular because many people died, cruelly.

I think he want injure them badly and take out the healer is because he want the other ant to finish the job as he going to take out the human king. My Other theory is that he not killing all of the Korean hunters is because he need an information about the human King if they have one.

Also why did people so angry about this thread? Anyway I really respect the og Mal user that are still active because most of them are dead or inactive

Jinwoo's reason for not going was super clear (wanted to be with his family), he put shadows only a few people and switched in when things got bad for them. Probably, triggered by perhaps Cha Hae-in's injury.

Also, why would you bring in the idea of being "more of a hero"? Have you not been watching the show? He's not in this to be anyone's hero. In fact, he's not even sure how human he feels after taking lives like he has, so why would you think his goal is strictly heroism or even predominantly heroism?

The ones who killed the queen look like they were getting more painful deaths for their actions compared to those outside that were just getting put down. Wouldn't you guess that was specifically because they killed the queen? Putting them in their place and ripping off arms the way a cruel, angry human might do to an insect?

Did you ever consider the Ant King purposefully left them barely alive on purpose? Killing them instantly is debatably a kindness to the Korean Hunters. He verbalizes his anger about the Korean Hunters killing the Queen. He even says killing them isnt enough. The Ant King knows the hoard is on their way to the Queen's nest. Leaving them just barely alive is tactical, brutal punishment; leaving them barely alive to suffer further and they know they can't battle a hoard in their condition.

Concerning Jinwoo intervening... I was pissed about this too. However, I'm waiting until next week's episode to make a final decision as to whether it's bad writing to "build up the final fight" or if there's something more to it.

Season 1 was so hype that that same hype carried over into season 2 along with high expectations, and maybe among those expectations were those of good writing. We probably forgot to tone it back a bit and just live for the hype and nothing else.

Anyway how I would've done it is have no one die, but have a lot of them on the brink of death after an attack from the ant king, and they would all retreat. With the whole country falling into despair, Jinwoo would then get with-great-power-comes-great-responsibility kind of talk from his mom, then he would go to the island SOLO. Maybe that cameraman guy would join him, since the he wouldn't die of course.

And with "no one dying", that's including the Japanese s-rankers as well. Yes Beru is wicked strong, but I think any s-rank should at least be able to fend off an attack from him, enough to get away and retreat at least. Plus, more characters alive means more people to go "oh Jinwoo so strong!'", right? Was about to say that it wouldn't really matter since these characters are so flat anyway, but there I go again wishing for well-written script and characters. Just focus on the HYPE dammit!

Only reason I'm even replying to this no brainer post is because the solo leveling anime only fans are doing a pathetic job defending the writing..
I'll finish this stupidity quickly as l its getting on my nerves,

Ist argument - Y korean hunter's heads not flying- it's becuz the ant ate the ice guy japnese hunter before facing the korean hunters. And as u have seen, the ant gains the power, knowledge and even to some extent, the personality of the people it eats, he started fighting more human like against the koreans. In the beginning he was fighting like an ant, just a mindless, emotionless creature, focused on eliminating the foes. But he evolved,as he ate humans and started behaving like them. And this trait or ability of ant king has been confirmed in the manga many times.

2nd complaint - y Jinwoo late again . Is it make him look cooler?

No, if u can't read the manhwa, at least read the subtitles properly before ranting, even many reaction youtubers are doing the same in their videos.
THERE IS A 10 MIN DELAY IN THE BROADCAST. IT WAS NOT LIVE STREAMING

JINWOO CANT SEE THROUGH HIS SHOADOWS NOR HE CAN COMMUNICATE WITH THEM. HE GAINS THAT ABILITY SOME 30 CHAPTER LATER IN THE FUTURE

As of now he can only give a specific command before inserting them. And the shadow can only follow that command it can't communicate with Jinwoo. There was no Shadow placed in the healer guy. It was only after Goto Ryuji got killed, and his connection with that particular shadow got disturbed, he realised something might be wrong. And it was mentioned in the manhwa later.

HE WAS ON TIME, HE WAS NOT LATE.

and for people who are complaining y he did not go to jeju with others and chose to stay home.. well

He has been fighting non stop ever since he became a player. Anyone would wanna take a break. So he did by taking necessary precautions.. he assessed everyone's ability at the gym and even put his shadows in them for the worst case scenario..
And unlike the typical shonen anime MC's, Jinwoo isnt someone who thinks only he can save everyone. There is an inner monologue in the manhwa where he even says that the world is big and there might be fighters stronger than him, hence, it's foolish to think of himself as a hero

Not a manga reader, but here is me trying to explain those two points after just finishing the episode.

1. Before the queen died he just seemed to try and kill everyone around. This was probably because of his instinct to protect the queen, no matter what it takes. After she died he clearly changed, seeing how he just straight up ignored the Korean hunters and went right for the queen. At that point he didn't really try to kill them anymore, because he had nothing left to protect and was just acting out of revenge. He only killed the healer because he was being a nuisance and cocky enough to think he would be safe in his stealth. After that kill he obviously was able to communicate and wanted revenge by killing their "king", so no need to kill anyone else.

2. Maybe Jinwoo needs to bring his shadows out to switch places with them and with the ant king around, there was the possibility he'd kill them quickly and then Jinwoo had no option anymore to quickly arrive on the island. Before his arrival the situation was under control from the Korean hunter's viewpoint, so he had no need to switch before the king arrived. But after he left and it was "only" normal ants again, his soldiers are able to defend the hunters and be out long enough for him to make a switch.

jinwoo went late as the broadcast wast 10min delayed (written in LN) he deployed his shadow in mostly korean hunters and Goto when he died he sensed something was wrong as he was watching the broadcast in tv with his family he broke his tv as his family couldn't watch the broadcast cuz he was about to go there by the time jinwoo reached their byung gyu was dead the healer he saw through his shadow that baek and choi were in danger so he deployed their shadow to protect them and exchanged the position, this was portrayed differently in anime as compared to manhwa because in upcoming arcs we'll get to know that he can see through his shadow on whoever he tagged so when he broke his tv he went outside to see what's going on in anime he gone to a rooftop as it would ideal place to exchange shadow rather in some streets (which might scare some normal civilian) their isn't any bad writing it's just you guys don't have enough brain to comprehend the situation

Not gonna defend this, just my opinion though:
1) He likely didn't know immediately what was going on in the island, so that's why the hero was late.
2) The Ant was about to wipe out the Koreans as well but stopped because as it said soldiers are worthless, so he went Hunting for the King instead.

It's definitely annoying that the koreans are all alive except the one guy whose death flag was raised since the first time we met him, but there is a logical sense besides the plot armor, so i can accept it.

But who watches Solo Leveling for the plot? The show is literally just a OP Guy + Cool Moments compilation. Even though there's some logic behind it all, and some really great moments in the Manhwa, it still lacks in writing. It's a cooler Demon Slayer pretty much.

@bokuwaryan AAAAAAAND we know that this is BULLSHIT. Because in the Manhwa Chapter 84 one of his soldiers notified him about a mugging taking place in a random alley and he went there to intercept the mugger. This was 1 day before the Jeju raid.

This arc has dogshit writing. Which is a shame cause until down the anime was decent.

@NIKO69NL if youre gonna be so sure about me not paying attention you could have read my old replies on the same argument you made though

anyway again we know from old episodes that jinwoo even without shadow exchange knows very well if his shadow soldiers are in danger or what their current status are and he have shadow soldiers for every s rank hunters on this mission so the moment cha got hit he knows the shadow soldier of cha is alarmed too

and about the priority of the ant king again sure good enough reason but still weak considering we saw how the japanese hunters besides goto the suppose human king got instantly beheaded again

Jin-woo still needs to prep or something before he goes somewhere to fight I assume. If he’s going somewhere as dangerous that S-ranks can get beaten up you prob want to prepare as much as possible so he def had to put things like food in his inventory (red gate incident is a example for this).

Ant king said that just killing soldiers wouldn’t be enough so if the hunters would die sooner or later meant for him that he could just leave to go for Goto. Though what I’m gonna say now is just a speculation of mine, I’d assume he figured simply beheading them would make their deaths too simple after they had killed their queen. It would line up with the way he thinks. And since I don’t want to keep arguing too much, just remember there is also the concept of plot armor

so ye the critics and not calling them outright haters are saying there are 2 major bad writing on this episode
one is the ant king beheads fast the japanese hunters while he did not behead the korean hunters except for the healer
second is why jinwoo decides to be a hero so late when there are many deaths already should he be more of a hero if he shows up soon or shows up from the very beginning of the mission so no one should have died?

so any counter answers to this bad writing claims because to me i do not have any i just go with suspension of disbelief and know that this show is about rule of cool mainly anyway
The ant prince is evolving. He went for direct kill like a monster at first but seeing the queen's body he's enraged and making them suffer. He even completely ignore the tank, going past him. As for Sung Jinwoo he's not wanting to be a hero and neither is he the shounen protag who wants to help everyone and save the world. If anything the anime so far has very clearly shown he's works for his interest and cares very little about other affairs.

People calling these bad writing aren't paying attention in the first place.
@MegamiRem Oh yeah sure, the way he made the healer suffer too by insta-killing him, c'mon now the writing's so convenienced you can't even cope anymore

"A character being not how you want it to be has nothing to do with writing

It's called nuance"

This is an outrageous take, so Jin-woo suddenly turned into a sadist, enjoying watching his fellow hunters being killed, while also edging them with the help of his shadow soldiers? What actually makes sense in here? There's no consistency in his character, he was just chilling and watching all of that happen on a rooftop, fully prepared, doing nothing. It's called BAD WRITING, they sacrificed his character to let him aurafarm by stepping in on the very last second. You can watch the episode again and think about all of that happening while Jin-woo is watching.

That aside, I for a second thought they were going to pull off a shocking plot twist by killing some of the "main cast" of the Hunters, but as the gods of convenience have it, the strongest-to-have-ever-lived ant that killed everyone before them for apparently no reason, just leaves them alive. Deals no lethal punches for no reason, and goes about his day. This trope is, of course, as old as it gets.

@Fischer77 So people are praising a show that not even the author considers top notch given how lazy he was in writing it? As usual this community disappoints more and more

You again.

@Armaniooo It's not an excuse to defend the bad writing of the show, and you still agree with me people are ignorant if they enjoy something mediocre, do you want a show of only fights? watch record of ragnarok, Solo leveling fails even in tailoring a decent power system, you don't even know what the powers of the other characters are...
I will always criticize solo leveling because it sucks, it doesn't deserve any recognition (if you wanted it to deserve it then the author should have tried harder to write it)

@TheCommoner Here is a different context, the titles you listed certainly have bad writing but they are designed to adapt to a certain type of television format, such as showing self-contained episodes in which the characters do their things... SL has none of that and a fallacious power progression that can't even be consistent with itself, you can mention that the fights are beautiful but they are extremely repetitive at a certain point. Furthermore One Punch Man has a story and characterizes the characters very well, in addition to the fights being beautiful precisely because we can see more characters at work with their different fighting styles... not to mention that at least it tries to solve the mysteries it creates, Solo leveling not even that

@Leon888 What are you trying to say? Do you not know that these types of shows are what people like? Solo leveling author clearly doesn't have the skill to write a good story but he does a good job at creating HYPE which is why this is popular to begin with. Most people want to be braindead and watch anime which I have nothing againist. The problem I do have is when people act like shows like this is some masterpiece and fail to analyize for more than 5 minutes and just say "muh aura farming is so cool"
@Fischer77 My problem is that this show gets too much consensus, that is, we are giving popularity and money to an author who doesn't know how to write a good story, it's like if in class someone were to remain silent during an exam and get a high grade while another who studies and applies himself fails... do you think that's fair?

It is a power fantasy anime that does power fantasy pretty good. Throughout Solo leveling there has been pretty good moments. Don't expect intricate plot or details. Couple that up with decent animation and people will watch it. To me it's like a noobie anime like Demon slayer that introduces a lot to anime. It's not my favourite anime, definitely not and it does have its problems which the sequel series thankfully fixed or is fixing but it is not a bad anime. I'd say it's decent anime that people mostly turn their brain off and watch.

if solo leveling let's other manhwas and webtoons getting popular and getting good adaptions then its done it's job. Many get into Manhwa by Solo Leveling. You have to give credit where credit is due.

Many people just love power fantasies. And this is a good one with great animation and that's why it's popular. If you hate it that much then don't watch it. Omniscient readers viewpoint is getting animated along with Lord of the Mysteries. Watch that when it comes out. If people like Mid series, let them watch it in peace and stop hating.

@LucenProject Bruh spoilers?
Also the anime skipped over why when went in, he was watching the broadcast.. I think they kinda messed it up but you're not meant to be thinking hard about it..

I don't get why people obssess over specifics, just watch the damn show.

I am kinda impressed that his standard shadows are keeping S ranked beasts at bay..

Wait, what did I say that was a spoiler? Isn't everything I said up to the episode 11 of season 2?
