Man, they did the mock duel a bit dirty, imo

In the anime it almost looks like Rudeus just threw a bunch of pebbles at Fitz and that somehow resulted in his victory. Actually in the LN he only used a single Stone Cannon. He made it the size of a fingertip and launched it at Fitz at tremendous speed like a bullet.
The duel took place within a Saint tier Healing circle so most injuries would be cured instantly. However had Rudeus aimed the bullet at Fitz's head, that would've been instant death, despite the circle. That's why Rudeus changed the trajectory and the bullet only crazed Fitz's cheek. That is not all, thought. The bullet kelp flying and not only broke through a protective Advanced tier barrier but also blew up the wall made out of special material that is meant to absorb all stray spells.
Fitz only fell down because of the shock and realization that he almost died on the spot.

They could've done this fight so much better. So much potential wasted, imho.

The rest of the episode is 10/10.

Yea idk why they change stuff that’s inferior to the original. At least the episode was still really good

Damn I didn’t know that, definitely makes me question the direction they chose to go instead. Sounds like it would have been great, and honestly Rudeus could use a moment of looking like a badass.

well in manga I think they did also not got into so many details but it worked for them. Hence, the direction would have thought they would do the same cutting more info (like who the hell cares).

Man, how the hell you remember this much. I have completed the LN upto 25 and I was like - "yea, something like that happened, good job animating it". Well it felt like incomplete but this much..!!

Well....I guess what happened in the Light Novel fits better with the reaction the other students/observers had when Rudeus won.

I mean Rudy said he used a spell cancellation but if he hadn't mentioned it I would've assumed his spell was just faster than Fitz's and I would not have been as speechless as the other observers....
ah well...in my opinion...

I agree, I’m going to be honest, it seems like they are leaving out too many of the finer details to add another minute of Elinalise being whore here and there the last few episodes.

Read the LN instead. It has additional chapters and illustrations. Plus the English translation is said to be completed by the end of this year.

It's also known for some glaring omitted translations, but most WN translations just aren't enjoyable to read for me, so I'd still go with the LN.

These OP moments are my favorite part of the story. The main reason I watch OP isekais is for such moments. I love when other characters (especially villains) go "holy shit!" about the MC.
Mushoku Tensei just happened to be interesting to the point of me reading the LN, unlike most isekais.
This was one of such fights so I really really liked it. Of course I would notice such disregard from the animators. They ruined the point of this duel and the implications it meant.
Rudeus defeated Fitz so one-sidedly you couldn't even call it a fight. The same Fitz who was considered the strongest student among all, the one you wouldn't dare mess with.
The reaction of students was not unlike when Rudeus and Eris saw Ruijerd pummeled to the ground in 3 seconds flat by Orsted. Which even lead many to fear Rudeus, understandably.

I'm reading the LN too and for me they adapts these chapters very well, and there are other notable changes in the anime aside from the mock duel between Rudy and Sylphy:
+ Rudy's reaction when Cliff mentions Eris: In the LN, he seems more shocked while in the anime, his reaction is less expressive. 
+ In the anime, in the library where Rudy and Sylphy meets again, Rudy mentions that he has found his family after the Mana Calamity except for "his childhood friend", while the LN it is "his mother" he's referring to. 
And there are cut content ,which is unavoidable, but these do not contribute much to the story.
I can understand if the directors make some changes to the anime. Some changes may be good, some may be unstatisfied.
Overall 10/10 for this episode, plus points for OP and ED!
It's great to see people enjoying this arc as I have seen some said School Arc is the most boring segment of MT because of its slow pace and lack of action.

Because an OP MC blowing a hole through a wall is such an isekai trope at this point, I expected the show to do the same. Instead, I ended up pleasantly surprised by the restraint. In a way, it makes the anime stand out against all of the clones by not following the trope so adamantly.

I think they not showing any OP scene all the time is actually very good decision.
We already shown Rudy can kill stray dragon alone, lets not turn off our brain and only crave for one-sided action scenes.
Use cool action OP sequence every single episode will be so boring, thats just a mock training afterall.

If they actually did what the source portrayed then it would be another run of the mill NEW OP STUDENT WOWS THE ENTIRE SCHOOL cliche. I'm ok with the revision because it made Rudeus humble and low key impressive while protecting Fitz' pride as an honor student. To be honest, I'd be lying if I wasn't expecting that cliche scene to happen since they wanted to see what he can do. Good thing the animators didn't go overboard like the source did.

Agree! This's only a mock duel, Rudeus's Disturb Magic ability is already enough to prove his impressive skills. In Fitts's POV, " a couple of pebbles thrown" were literrally high-speed rock bullets that took her off-balance and one even cut her cheek. If the bullets were aimed at her face, that would be overkill. The students witnessing the duel already started gossiping and be cautious of Rudy. We have seen Rudeus's OP moments in both seasons now, and I'm sure there will be more in the future.
